MARITIME SECURITY EXPLAINED

Maritime security involves a range of overlapping actors and sectors. Definitions of maritime security vary among prominent institutions, including the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Managment, Council of the European Union, International Maritime Organization, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, U.S. Department of Transportation, reflecting their respective mandates, objectives, and perspectives.

Despite differences in institutional responsibilities, a common emphasis is placed on the protection of maritime activities, infrastructure, and navigation, as well as the lawful use of the maritime domain. Definitions consistently highlight risk management, resilience, international cooperation, and the safeguarding of critical maritime systems. Given the breadth and complexity of the maritime security concept, developing sustainable solutions to maritime security challenges often requires a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to research.
